Eight rooms and one long table

The lodge is small on purpose: eight rooms, one long table, and room for the twelve people who ski the tenure each day. You come in off the creek road, hang your gear in the drying room, and sit down to a dinner that Sofie has been building since the afternoon. Then the wax bench, the radio check, and early lights. That is the evening, every night.

the rooms

Eight rooms, no more

Eight rooms means the lodge only ever holds the people on the tenure that day. No crowd, no lineup for the drying room, no stranger you did not ski with. Plain, warm rooms with good beds, thick curtains for the short winter mornings, and a window that usually has snow piling against it.

dinners by sofie halloran

One table, every night

Sofie Halloran cooks for the whole lodge at one long table. It is not a restaurant and there is no menu to choose from: there is what she made that day, and it is always more than you can finish after a day in the cold. Big pots, bread out of the oven, and a dessert that appears whether you asked for it or not.

You eat with the people you skied with, and by the second night the table is loud. Tell us before you arrive about anything you cannot eat and Sofie cooks around it without fuss.

1,540 m · the drying room

The most important room in the building

The drying room runs all night. You hang your gloves, boots, and shells when you come in off the road, and every morning they are warm and dry before the 5:45 board. It sounds like a small thing. After three days on the tenure it is the thing guests remember, because nobody has ever put on a cold, wet boot at Powderhorn.

It is also where the day quietly ends. Gear hung, boots racked, the smell of warm wax drifting in from the bench next door.

What the drying room takes

  • Boots, warm and dry by the board.
  • Gloves and liners on the racks overnight.
  • Shells and layers, hung not piled.
  • A heated bench for the odd wet thing you forgot.

20:00 · the evening

How a night winds down

Evenings are quiet by design. You skied hard, and 5:45 comes early. The lodge does not fight that.

  1. 16:15In off the road. Gear to the drying room, boots on the racks.
  2. 17:42The radio check: all groups down, sweep clear at the road.
  3. 18:30Dinner at the long table. Whatever Sofie built that afternoon.
  4. 20:00The wax bench. Tomorrow's edges sorted, stories getting taller.
  5. 21:30Early lights. 5:45 comes fast, and everyone knows it.

The lodge has a small bar in the common room, there for a quiet drink by the fire after dinner. It is an amenity, not a nightclub, and it keeps early hours like everything else here.
